The Shemagh (Yashmagh)
The shemagh — also called the yashmagh — is a square patterned cotton headscarf, most famously red on white, worn over a taqiyah and secured with the egal. It dominates daily dress in Saudi Arabia and appears in the UAE and Qatar by taste and season. Ashbiliya carries it in white and red, in sizes from children to men, across 11 UAE branches; prices are shown in-store.
What is a shemagh?
The shemagh is a square cloth woven with a distinctive interlocking pattern, folded into a triangle, worn over the taqiyah and held by the black egal. The pattern — not just the colour — is what separates a shemagh from the plain white ghutra.
Its names travel with geography: "shemagh" prevails in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, while "yashmagh" is the common form in Iraq and among some Gulf communities — all naming the same patterned piece. Ashbiliya stocks the shemagh in both white and red, from trusted brands and our own label.
Red shemagh vs white shemagh
The red shemagh — red pattern on a white ground — is the iconic form and the backbone of Saudi daily and formal dress; across the Gulf it also sees more wear in winter thanks to its relatively heavier cloth.
The white shemagh carries a white-on-white pattern: a quieter elegance that sits between the formality of the ghutra and the presence of a pattern. Many choose it for summer and for occasions that call for a composed look without strong colour.
Shemagh fabrics and grades
As with the ghutra, quality is set by the cotton grade, weave precision and edge finishing — plus a fourth factor here: the sharpness, regularity and colour-fastness of the pattern.
| Grade | Material | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday | Cotton | Daily wear |
| Mid-range | Mercerized cotton | Softer feel, steadier colour |
| Premium | Japanese or Swiss cotton | Occasions — the sharpest pattern and fastest colour |
How to recognise a premium shemagh
- Pattern regularity: on a premium piece the motif repeats with total precision — no drifting lines at the folds.
- Colour-fastness: good red neither fades nor bleeds into the white after washing.
- Edges: dense, straight stitching with no stray threads.
- Weight and drape: premium cloth falls in balance — neither stiff nor limp on the head.
- The name: choose brands with a track record in the Gulf market.
The shemagh in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar
In Saudi Arabia the red shemagh rules daily life — worn by every generation from school to diwan, with a man’s polish sometimes read from his shemagh’s brand and the crispness of its press. Jordan and Iraq have a similar presence under local names and customs.
In the UAE and Qatar the white ghutra remains the daily default, with the shemagh appearing by taste and season — more in winter. That is why our branches carry both colours in full size runs: the Saudi customer finds what he knows, and the Emirati or Qatari customer completes his wardrobe.
Shemagh sizes and how it is worn
Shemagh sizes run like ghutra sizes, chosen by head circumference and preferred fold. It is worn over a fitted taqiyah and secured with the egal, folded in the same styles as the ghutra — from simple to formal. We stock sizes from children to men, and our sizing guide helps you choose.
Caring for your shemagh
Wash a red shemagh separately for its first washes to protect the white ground, in moderate-temperature water. Iron slightly damp to bring the pattern out, and store folded away from sunlight to keep the colour. More in our care and storage guide.
