Caring for Your Kandura, Ghutra, and Bisht — Washing, Ironing, and Storage

Washing kandura and ghutra

• Use cold water (30°C or below) — hot water can shrink natural cotton
• Mild detergent, no bleach
• Turn the garment inside out to protect the outer weave
• Wash whites separately from colours
• Use gentle or hand-wash settings

Drying

• Hang on a wide hanger to maintain shoulder shape
• Dry in shade, never in direct sun
• Avoid the dryer for premium pieces
• Let the garment dry fully before ironing or storage

Ironing

• Iron while slightly damp for the best finish
• Use steam to ease wrinkles without over-pressing
• Medium-high heat for cotton
• Start with collar, cuffs, and sleeves, then the body

Storage

• Hang kanduras, don’t fold them for long-term storage
• Use wooden or padded hangers
• Fold ghutras flat in a dry drawer
• Use cotton garment bags for rarely-worn pieces
• Dry rice sachets or lavender absorb humidity

Bisht care

Never wash a bisht in water.

• Dry-clean only, at a specialist
• Hang on a wide hanger between uses — never fold
• Store in a cotton bag away from dust and humidity
• Inspect gold or silver thread after each use

Shoe and sandal care

• Wipe leather with a dry cloth after each wear
• Apply colour-matched conditioner every two weeks
• Store in a dry place with shoe trees
• Avoid direct sun which dries and cracks leather
