What is a kandura?
The kandura (also called thobe or dishdasha) is the traditional Gulf men’s robe — a long, loose garment worn daily and for occasions. Its details differ by country in collar, tassel and cut.
Emirati Kandura
Collarless, with a tarboosh tassel from the center of the chest.
Distinguished by clean simplicity: a loose cut and an unbroken neckline. The chest tassel ranges from plain for daily wear to decoratively woven for occasions. White in summer; earth tones in winter.
Saudi Thobe
Stand collar with two front buttons.
Longer and looser, with a formal silhouette from the stand collar; the front buttons ease dressing. It straddles traditional and semi-formal contexts — offices and meetings.
Omani Kandura
Collarless, with a side-shoulder tassel and embroidered neckline.
Identifiable by neckline embroidery and a tassel at the shoulder rather than the chest. Oman is known for colour variety — beige, grey, soft blue and white.
Kuwaiti Dishdasha
Single-button collar, slimmer cut, lighter fabric.
Slightly shorter and more fitted, with a single-button collar and lighter fabric for humidity. It overlaps with Bahraini and Qatari designs in some details.
